Itinerary

Day 1 - Join trip at Heraklion Airport, Crete. Drive to Zaros.

Our trip begins at Heraklion Airport (HER) at 4.00pm in the arrivals hall. If you would like to join the complimentary airport transfer today, the latest your flight can arrive is 3.30pm. Your tour leader will be waiting in the hall with an Explore signboard at the exit doors from the immigration/luggage retrieval area. Please be aware that they may be waiting to greet both customers whose flight has just arrived as well as those who arrived earlier, so they may be looking in a different direction to the one you're approaching from.

After meeting up we will then travel together as a group (50 kilometre/31 miles, approximately 1 hour) to our hotel for the night in Zaros in the rugged Idi Mountains. After check in the Leader will organise timings for the welcome meeting, and a group meal for those interested.

Zaros is a charming village located at the foothills of Mount Psiloritis. It's known for its natural beauty, including the nearby freshwater Lake Zaros, which is a popular spot to enjoying the serene atmosphere. The village is also famous for its bottled spring water, sourced from the local springs and its traditional products, including olive oil, honey, and local herbs. Here you can enjoy authentic Cretan cuisine, featuring fresh local produce, in one of its tavernas.

Day 3 - Honey, herbs and a traditional gyros lunch

Today's food adventure starts with a visit to a traditional Cretan honey farm, where you'll discover the time-honoured methods behind local honey production. You'll have the chance to learn about the different varieties of honey produced in the region and taste the delicious end products yourself. The producer we visit, the Koutantos family, are known for their excellent quality and sustainable practices around hive management. This 30-minute stop provides insight into one of Crete's most celebrated natural products. Next we drive to Maravel Garden in Spili (60 km, 1.5 hours) a scenic drive through Crete's picturesque countryside. Maravel Garden is a wonderful botanical haven where you'll be guided through a herbal garden featuring over 300 varieties of medicinal and aromatic plants. You'll learn about the herbs that play a significant role in Cretan and Greek cuisine, as well as their traditional uses in medicine. We'll then taste fresh local yoghurt, giving you a full sensory experience of the local produce. If you're inspired by the natural remedies, there's a chance to buy herbs and related products directly from the garden shop.

Our next stop is the charming village of Spili, known for its authentic Cretan atmosphere and delicious gyros. Gyros is a street food 'must try' when in Greece and especially on a food trip! The name 'gyros' comes from the Greek word for 'turn' or 'revolution,' which refers to the way the meat is continuously turned and roasted. Traditionally, the meat used is pork or chicken. Once cooked, the meat is thinly sliced and typically served wrapped in a warm pita bread, along with tomatoes, onions, and tzatziki, a creamy yogurt-based sauce flavoured with garlic and cucumbers. In some cases, fries/chips or salad may also be added to the wrap. Gyros is similar to other spit-roasted dishes such as the Turkish doner kebab or the Middle Eastern shawarma but has its own unique Greek flavours and combinations. It's a very popular street food and fast food option all over Greece. After lunch we drive back to Chania (85 km, 1.5 hours) another scenic drive passing through more of Crete's beautiful landscape.

Day 5 - Wake up in Athens, city tour and time to relax

Upon arrival in Piraeus, Athens' bustling port, we'll start the day like a true Athenian by enjoying koulouri, a traditional sesame-coated bread ring. Koulouri is a popular street snack in Greece, especially in the morning. It's light, crispy on the outside, and soft on the inside, making it a perfect quick breakfast bite. Along with the koulouri, we'll have a hot drink and juice at a local cafe near the port to ease into the day.

After breakfast, we'll take a short drive to our hotel to drop off our bags, so you can explore Athens without any extra weight. We begin our day with a walking tour through the vibrant local markets of Athens with our tour leader. The herb shops near the market are particularly popular, filled with aromatic herbs like oregano and thyme that play a key role in Greek cuisine. The journey from Piraeus to Poros takes about 1 hour and 45 minutes (50 km), offering scenic views of the Saronic Gulf islands along the way. Poros is known for its rich vegetation and green landscapes, creating a picturesque and tranquil setting upon arrival. After disembarking we drive to our hotel to drop our bags off before we embark on our exploration of Poros. In the afternoon, we join our tour leader for a guided walk around the Poros Peninsula (approx. 2 hours). Poros is not only lush with natural beauty but also steeped in history. The island has been inhabited since ancient times and played an important role in Greek history. Along our walk, we'll pass by significant historical landmarks such as the ruins of the Russian naval base and the remains of the Sanctuary of Poseidon dating back to the neolithic period, located in the northern part of the island. The Epidavros Theatre, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1988, is one of the most important archaeological treasures in Greece. Known for its incredible acoustics and beautiful structure, this ancient site once thrived due to the Asklepieion, an ancient healing centre. Dedicated to Asclepius, the healing god and legendary son of Apollo, the sanctuary of Epidavros was one of the most important of the ancient world, and it remained a site of pilgrimage from the sixth century BC to Roman times. We'll spend about 1.5 hours exploring the theatre independently, allowing you time to take in its historical and cultural significance.

You'll also visit a small museum on-site, where you'll delve into the history and processes of the Karonis family distillery. A highlight of the tour will be tasting the locally produced drinks, including Masticha, a rare liqueur that the Karonis Distilleries is uniquely permitted to produce outside of Chios. After the tasting session, we'll have a chance to purchase some of their products before heading back to the hotel for the evening.

Climate and country information

Greece

Climate

Greece has such a vast geographical difference between the mainland and the islands, and travel is possible at all times of year but the climate can vary depending on when you go. During late spring or early autumn, in the months of April-May or September-October, temperatures are warm and pleasant, usually hovering around 77 degrees. Rainfall is low, but can be erratic during these months. Cooler evenings take the heat off the day. If you have booked a walking holiday, wild flowers bloom during the spring, adding color to the hiking trails. Summers are hot and dry, with plenty of sunshine and little rain. Temperatures can go north of 95 degrees in July and August. On the islands, restaurants and bars may be busy with cruise ship passengers. While this period definitely gives you a ‘summer holiday’ feeling, those wishing to explore Greece’s ancient sites may find the heat challenging. When traveling in winter, from late November to early March, the villages will be very quiet. Temperatures in Athens at this time are around 50 and 60 degrees, while the nights will be colder. Hotels in northern Greece in particular are well adapted to deal with cold winters, having proper heating and warm fires to retreat to after a day of exploring. This makes it a good destination for travel between November-March.

Comfortable lightweight walking shoes or trainers are recommended for walking tours and sightseeing, plus sandals for relaxing.

We recommend taking a water bottle, sunhat, sunglasses, torch (in case of emergencies), sun cream and insect repellent with you. You may also find walking poles useful for our optional walks, as the terrain can be uneven underfoot. You should also bring swimwear and a towel.

In Greece sink plugs aren't always provided in hotel rooms, so we would suggest bringing your own.

Tipping

Explore leader
Tipping isn't compulsory, and we work hard to ensure that our leaders all receive a fair wage. You may however, want to recognise a leader that has done a great job or really added to your trip by giving them a tip. We're often asked about the recommended amount. It is a tricky one, and down to personal preference, but we would recommend £15 to £20 per person per week as a guideline.
Local crew
Although voluntary, tipping is a recognised part of life in this region of the world. Some local staff will look to members of the group for personal recognition of particular services provided. Accordingly, you should allow approximately £25 of local currency for tipping.

In order to make things easier for you, the Explore Leader may organise a group's tips kitty and if this is the case, they will account for it throughout the trip.

Accommodation notes

The overnight ferry from Crete to Athens typically takes around 8.5 to 9 hours, departing from Chania port and arriving at Piraeus, the main port of Athens. We use 2-berth cabins. These are private cabins with two single beds. The cabins come equipped with basic amenities such as bedding, towels, a small desk, and reading lights. There's usually an en-suite bathroom with a toilet and shower. All cabins have air conditioning. The en-suite bathroom has essential toiletries, and there's enough space to store luggage under the beds or in small compartments. Ferries typically have several amenities to make the overnight journey comfortable, including restaurants and cafes, lounges and deck areas. You can relax in common areas or enjoy the sea views from outdoor decks. Some ferries offer small shops, TV rooms, and sometimes even cinemas to pass the time.

Food and drink

You won't be able to participate fully in this trip if you have a restrictive diet due to the nature of the food inclusions. We do feel this trip is suited for vegetarians, vegans but some meals will have less options than those who eat meat and fish.

We have purposely not included all the meals on this trip to allow you the opportunity to experience a variety of different restaurants of your choice. On many evenings the trip leader will facilitate a group dining experience for those wishing to join in.

Food and drink

Can you drink the water?
The water quality is poor and therefore it is recommended to avoid drinking tap water during your trip.
