Clothing

July and August are the hottest months and lightweight cotton clothing is best. During spring and autumn temperatures can be lower or drop during the evenings and there is also a stronger possibility of rain. You'll need your swimming costume and light rainwear may be needed at any time of year. A warm fleece or jacket is recommended for cooler evenings and layers for if you decide to climb Mount Vesuvius where the temperatures are considerably lower at the top.

For the Walk of the Gods you will need comfortable walking trousers, and also a rain coat and fleece in case of bad weather.

Footwear

We recommend taking comfortable walking shoes for exploring and trainers or sandals for relaxing.

If you are intending on walking on Mount Vesuvius and the Walk of the Gods, it is essential that you bring walking boots - leather or fabric are both fine. The paths are a bit rocky underfoot and so you could twist an ankle if not wearing boots. Trainers are not recommended. Make sure that your boots are worn-in and comfortable before the start of the trip. We recommend that you wear/carry your walking boots as hand luggage on the international flight: should your luggage be delayed, your well broken-in boots will be irreplaceable.

Please note that we reserve the right to exclude participants on the Walk of the gods on safety grounds if wearing unsuitable footwear.

Luggage

20kg

Luggage: On tour

One main piece of baggage and a day pack. Remember you are expected to carry your own luggage so don't overload yourself.

Equipment

We advise taking a water bottle for our included walks as well as sun glasses, sunscreen and a sun hat. In case of emergency we recommend that you carry a first aid kit and a torch. Bring a swimming suit and towel for taking a dip in the sea. We also recommend bringing a reusable shopping bag, so that you don't need to use plastic shopping bags during the holiday.

For the Walk of the Gods we strongly recommend that you bring walking poles, as the path is over uneven rocky ground, some sections are steep and the descents can be a bit tough on the knees. We'd suggest taking a backpack (handheld bags are not suitable) with a waterproof cover for this walk to store your camera, water, a picnic lunch and snacks, any clothing and sun products required, etc.

In May 2019, the Municipality of Capri introduced a law forbidding the use of any disposable plastic objects such as bags, cutlery, plates, cups, food packaging, trays, straws on the island of Capri. Violations can incur a fine of up to €500.00.

Tipping

Explore leader
Tipping isn't compulsory, and we work hard to ensure that our leaders all receive a fair wage. You may however, want to recognise a leader that has done a great job or really added to your trip by giving them a tip. We're often asked about the recommended amount. It is a tricky one, and down to personal preference, but we would recommend £15 to £20 per person per week as a guideline.

Local crew
Although voluntary, tipping is a recognised part of life in this region of the world. Some local staff will look to members of the group for personal recognition of particular services provided. Accordingly, you should allow approximately £20 of local currency for tipping. In order to make things easier for you, the Explore Leader may organise a group's tips kitty and if this is the case, they will account for it throughout the trip.
