Moderate grade cycling trips

Moderate small group cycling trips

A moderate grade cycling trip is well-suited to those who are used to spending time in the saddle, and accustomed to an energetic climb or two. Routes will be on predominantly quiet roads and cycle trails and may feature a more sustained hill to reach a fantastic viewpoint. You can expect to be cycling for around 4 to 6 hours or 40 to 60 kilometres each day. While our cycling tours are active trips, they’re not a race - wherever possible, we enable everyone to cycle at a pace that suits them, regrouping at regular intervals. Each ride also often includes a support vehicle should you require assistance on your journeys.

A tour by bike is a fantastic way to explore a range of extraordinary destinations. From cycling the Atlas Mountains and Sahara Desert in Morocco to discovering  the dramatic Dalmation Coast and ancient towns on a cycle tour in Croatia. Explore's moderate grade bike tours offer the perfect holidays for avid cyclists.

FAQ

What can I expect?

Think cycling through the countryside in Provence or the dramatic beauty of Wadi Rum in Jordan, soaking up the scenery along the way. There will be steady ascents to tackle but you’ll be greeted by gorgeous views at the top, such as from the Gombori Pass in Georgia.

What should I pack?

With more time spent in the saddle than an easy grade cycling trip, you may wish to invest in a gel seat cover for extra comfort or good quality padded shorts. Protection for your neck and arms - such as sun cream or a lightweight scarf or buff - are also essential, especially in sunnier destinations.

You may also wish to bring cycling shoes. You’re welcome to wear clipless shoes, though please note that we don’t provide clip-in pedals, so you will need to bring these with you as well. The trip notes will advise you if a pannier or handlebar bag is fitted on the bike, as well as what else to pack. For an overview on packing for a cycling tour, check out our packing guide. Larger luggage will be transported for you.

What is a moderate and challenging grade cycling trip?

A moderate and challenging grade cycling trip features moderate cycling days, as well as some more challenging rides. If you’re looking to push yourself with occasional steep ascents and hillier terrain, a moderate to challenging grade tour is a great balance.

Can I use an e-bike?

An e-bike is a great option if you’re looking to join a partner on a more active cycling trip, or are worried about your fitness, or simply want an easier ride. Thanks to the battery and motor, an e-bike makes ascents and hillier terrain much easier, allowing you to cycle at a pace that suits you. Check the Cycling Information tab of your chosen trip or give us a call to find out if an e-bike is available. Many of our trips in Europe now offer the option of an e-bike, and their booming popularity means that availability is ever increasing around the globe.
