Temples and tigers: Adventures through India

The Golden Triangle is a much-loved tourist route that covers Delhi, Agra and Jaipur. Find out Bella's take on our small group tour to this striking destination, as well as a visit to Ranthambore National Park.

Taking in three of India's most evocative cities, the Golden Triangle is a much-loved tourist route that covers Delhi, Agra and Jaipur. You'll want to spend around one week here to give this beautiful area justice, with enough time factored in to visit all ends of the extreme - from peaceful gardens and ancient structures to jam-packed roads and bustling markets.

Our eight-day Golden Triangle tour ventures through the cultural heart of northern India, where you'll explore Old Delhi by rickshaw, visit the 'pink city' of Jaipur and get closer to local life with a stay in a family-run heritage property.

We caught up with Bella, who joined our India tour - and added our Ranthambore Wildlife Extension to the end of her trip. Read on to discover what she made of her adventures in India:

How did you find your tour leader?

Our tour leader was incredible. He accommodated our needs, like if someone wanted to see or do something extra, and answered what felt like every question we asked him - we all wondered how he remembered so much! Having a tour leader who knows what's going on makes all the difference on a small group tour to a new destination.

What were your fellow Explorers like?

There were nine of us in our group, and I was the only solo traveller. I'd definitely recommend this trip to others travelling alone, as you truly see all the must-sees and lesser-known spots with the help of your tour leader. Our group got on well and we'd often stick together, although we could spend our free time however we wanted.

I'd been nervous to visit India as a completely solo traveller, so joining a small group tour was perfect - especially on your first day in India, where everything can feel overwhelming!

Rickshaws parked on a narrow street, people walking nearby, large leafy trees overhead, with colorful shops lining the road. A person in a yellow jacket and purple backpack walks away.

What's the food and drink like in India?

Everything we ate and drank was really, really delicious. We tucked into authentic, local food for breakfast, lunch and dinner - it's rare to see any Western options. I already liked Indian cuisine so I knew I would love tasting my way through the food and drink in India. Most Indian cuisine is vegetarian and it was clearly pointed out what each dishes were, as it's typically served buffet-style. I'm a vegetarian and I'd recommend India to other vegetarian travellers. Our tour leader also guided us on how to eat the different dishes.

What was your highlight of the trip?

My highlight of India has to be the Taj Mahal. In fact, on our last day, our tour leader asked us what our highlight of the trip was, and we all said the same thing! The Taj Mahal is absolutely breathtaking - it's one of those places you have to experience to really appreciate it. Getting up close, going inside and seeing all the details was really special. The Taj Mahal contains the tombs of Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan and Mumtaz Mahal. Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan built the Taj Mahal for his wife, Mumtaz Mahal, following her death in 1631 AD.

I was also so happy that I added the Ranthambore Wildlife Extension to my trip so another highlight has to be seeing Bengal tigers in the wild. Travelling in an open-top jeep through the park, it was amazing to see majestic Bengal tigers in their natural environment.

What was your most memorable moment?

One afternoon in Jaipur, a few of us visited the local market. Jaipur is such a beautiful city anyway, but strolling around the markets and visiting the shops was a really special, authentic moment - it was very joyful.

We stayed at a variety of properties, which are chosen based on their location and authenticity. My favourite place we stayed in was the traditional haveli in Jaipur. It's like a palace and felt super luxurious, and all of the staff were really lovely and made us feel at home.

How did you find the pace of this trip?

The pace of the Golden Triangle tour is described as full-on, but you still have free time is still factored in. It's a week-long tour and you pack in all the highlights of each city you visit, but we never felt like we were doing too much; so while it's a busy itinerary, it's definitely worth it!

Describe this trip in one word?

Dynamic. When I first arrived in India it felt a little overwhelming, but once I'd settled in, I got used to the pace and environment. I remember the first day feeling like I didn't know what was happening, but you soon get used to it, and you'll enjoy it much more if you just embrace it!

Bella's top five highlights of India:

Excluding the obvious - Agra's Taj Mahal, Jaipur's Amber Palace - here are a few more Golden Triangle highlights:

  1. Baby Taj: Itimad-ud-Daulah (or Baby Taj) is best enjoyed alongside a visit to Agra Fort. These two buildings stand on each side of the Yamuna River.
  2. Heritage Transport Museum: Check out India's old transport methods, from wooden carriages to vintage motorbikes.
  3. Jama Masjid: One of the biggest mosques in India, Jama Masjid was built in the 17th century and offers a calm respite from bustling Old Delhi.
  4. Fatehpur Sikri: This deserted city features incredible buildings, including the Panch Mahal and Diwan-i-Khas.
  5. Markets: I loved exploring the markets of India, especially in Jaipur. Shop for local spices, colourful textiles and more!
