Highlights of South America

From exploring the world's largest rainforest in Brazil and uncovering the sacred lost city of Machu Picchu in Peru to hiking amongst the glacial lakes and jagged peaks of Patagonia in Chile, there are countless once-in-a-lifetime moments to be had in South America. Here are just a few.

Machu Picchu, Peru

Arguably one of the most well-known highlights of South America is the UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the New Seven Wonders of the World, Machu Picchu. A maze of dry-stone walls and pristine terraces adorn this remote, grassy plateau set high up in the Andes Mountains of Peru. Whether you walk the Inca Trail or arrive by coach, nothing will prepare you for the moment that you catch your first glimpse of these majestic archaeological ruins.

"A surprisingly emotional experience. The breathtaking views are best taken in up high, away from the crowds around the main site. Looking down at the ruins balancing on a clifftop, who could fail to be impressed by this ancient feat of construction?" Carmel, Product Manager

Exotic wildlife, Galapagos Islands

From giant tortoise and fierce iguana on the island of Santa Cruz to Galapagos penguin and basking sea lion on Tintoreras Island, the main highlight of a trip to the Galapagos Islands has to be the astonishing array of exotic wildlife. Spot red and blue-footed booby birds flocking to the cliffs of the North, West and Central Islands and join a green sea turtle for a swim in the crystalline turquoise-blue waters of the central, southern and eastern archipelago.

Salt Flats, Bolivia

In no other South America country can you enjoy as much tranquillity and experience so much interaction with the locals outside of the tourist throng than in Bolivia. But the main highlight of this stunning country is, without a doubt, the ethereal and other-worldly landscape of the Salt Plains of Uyuni where the cobalt-blue sky blends seamlessly into the glistening white salt flats to create the disorientating illusion of an endless horizon.

Patagonia, Chile

Don your walking boots to discover the vast glacial regions of Patagonia in Chile. Home to the largest body of glaciers outside of the Polar Regions, the Southern Patagonian Ice Fields are a highlight not to be missed in South America. Hike amongst the craggy snow-capped peaks and glistening aquamarine waters of the Torres del Paine National Park, and keep an eye out for guanaco, black-necked swan and pink flamingo.

"There is nothing like seeing the raw effects of Mother Nature in person, and witnessing the might of these glaciers. Hearing the roars and cracks as pieces fall into the ocean is a once in a lifetime opportunity." Carmel, Product Manager

Volcanoes, Ecuador

Ecuador's Cotopaxi National Park was once described as the 'Avenue of the Volcanoes' by the German explorer Alexander von Humboldt. The snow-dusted cone of Cotopaxi, one of South America's most well-known active volcanoes, rises from the plateau with mighty precision and flaunts an almost ethereal symmetrical form as if it has been painted onto the horizon. Surrounding this impressive centre-piece, the Andean valley boasts endless stretches of verdant meadows and glassy lakes; a haven for birdlife, wild horses and white-tailed deer.
