A taste of Italy: 5 best trips for foodies

Italy is a country as synonymous with its food as with its history, art, architecture or fashion. A holiday in Italy always involves eating (and drinking) well, but here are our top five Italian trips for gourmands.

1. Cycle Puglia

Discover Puglia’s distinctive wines, cheeses and pasta, and enjoy some gentle rides in beautiful surroundings, on a foodie cycling holiday. Our easy-graded Cycle Puglia trip includes a visit to a local ‘caseficio’ to see how local cheeses are made and to sample some for ourselves, including the incredible burrata. You’ll also visit a family-run bakery to try the famous Altamura bread, made from durum flour and used for bruscetta across Italy, and have a wine tasting session.

For those that prefer to stay on two feet, our Taste of Puglia walking trip is another way to combine the region’s wonderful food with the great outdoors.

2. A taste of Emilia Romagna

Emilia Romagna is a region of exquisite food. This is the birthplace of parma ham, parmesan cheese, balsamic vinegar, tortellini and Lambrusco wine, to name a few. When we’re not sampling this region’s many culinary delights on the Emilia Romagna walking trip, we’re exploring the architectural gems of Bologna, Modena and Ravenna, and discovering the canals of the region’s ‘little Venice’, Comacchio.

3. Lake Como Walking

Dine on the banks of Lake Como overlooking spectacular views of shimmering topaz water and verdant forested hillsides soaring into the clear blue skies on our 8-day walking trip in Italy. Feast on the catch of the day to replenish the energy reserves and don't miss out on the delicious fish risotto - a local speciality. Wander through lush vineyards and chestnut groves on your way to the ancient village of Aurogna and soak tired legs in the hotel's lakeside swimming pool as the sun sets behind the mountainous horizon.

4. Tuscany Food Adventure

Combine the landscapes of Southern Tuscany with the vineyards and olive groves of this rustic region. Take in the bustling atmosphere at the Neoclassical Central Market - the second largest indoor market in Europe - where you’ll find fresh produce, poultry and the catches of the day. You’ll enjoy a street food lunch sourced from the torteria stands, accompanied by a regional wine or coffee.

5. Classical Sicily

Renowned for its fresh seafood, mouth-watering cheeses and fine wines, Sicily packs a punch with its flavours as well as its history. Visit the beautiful amphitheatre in Taormina, Agrigento’s Valley of the Temples, the hilltop medieval town of Erice and Palermo’s Botanical Gardens on this week-long introduction to Sicily. There’s also the chance to go up Mt Etna by cable car. Evenings are left free to explore the island’s fantastic dining options – your tour leader is on hand to give their top local recommendations.
