6 top cycling holidays for autumn

Bringing more balanced temperatures and fewer crowds, autumn is a fantastic time for a cycling trip. Soak up a Mediterranean coastline from the saddle, or head further afield to the Albanian mountains. Wherever you cycle this autumn, you'll find beautiful scenery.

1. Cycle the Dalmatian Coast

Thanks to the Mediterranean climate cycling the Dalmatian Coast is perfect at any time of the year. But as the autumn begins you’ll still find pleasantly warm weather to accompany you on your rides, and a coastal breeze to keep you cool. Crowds in Croatia will dwindle throughout the season, giving you plenty of choice when it comes to waterfront bars and restaurants. While October has an average temperature of around 18 degrees celsius, you’ll still be able to enjoy a refreshing dip in the ocean or a wander along a quiet beach.

2. Cycle Albania

Ready for something special? Albania may not be your first thought for a cycling destination but rest assured this somewhat unusual destination delivers on windswept mountain passes, delicious food to fuel your ride and not to mention the chance to experience it before everyone else discovers its charms. Cycling in Albania in summer can get incredibly hot, and autumn brings with it cooler temperatures whilst still staying plenty warm enough to enjoy the Albian Riviera.

3. Cycle Dolomites, Lake Garda and Venice

Cycling against the backdrop of rugged mountain peaks along cycle paths and quiet backroads, Cycling the Dolomites, Lake Garda and Venice combines lakes, mountains and coast for the perfect autumnal escape. Expect fewer crowds and lower temperatures, and less competition for space in the cultural hotspots of Verona and Venice. Throw in a scenic ferry across Lake Garda and Soave's famous light bodied white wines, and you have yourself a winning combination.

4. Cycle Saigon to Hanoi

As the dry season approaches in October and November, autumn is a great time to cycle Vietnam. These months are among the best for visiting Hanoi and Halong Bay where, after exploring the south and centre of Vietnam, you’ll be boarding a boat through remarkable limestone scenery to visit Sung Sot Cave, and wandering the city of fascinating Hanoi on foot.

5. Cycle Morocco - Atlas to the Sahara

Morocco’s hot season draws to a close in October, with autumn bringing a more comfortable temperature that’s perfect for cycling. On this moderate grade cycling tour of Morocco, set off in the heart of the Atlas Mountains where you’ll bike to the impressive fortified village of Ait Ben Haddou, that was on the former caravan route between the Sahara and Marrakesh. Later in the trip, you’ll swap your bike for a camel and embark on a journey into the desert, passing sand dunes of up to 150 metres.

6. Cycle Turkey

September is one of the best months for cycling Turkey, thanks to its pleasantly warm temperatures and bright blue skies. As you cycle the hills and coastline of ancient Lycia you’ll experience local village life in Minare and Sutlegen, marvel at the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Xanthos, and stop for a swim at Patara Beach. While the weather in late autumn can be more varied, you may still see temperatures reach up to 29 degrees celsius.
